The Role of Rajyoga Meditation in Influencing and Enhancing Self-Discipline and Self-Confidence among Youth: A Review
Abstract This comprehensive review paper synthesizes the academic literature on the intricate relationship between self-discipline and self-confidence, with a particular emphasis on the role of Rajyoga Meditation as both a theoretical framework and practical intervention for youth. Self-discipline, understood as the capacity to regulate one’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in pursuit of long-term goals, is widely recognized as a foundational determinant of success and personal growth. It enables individuals to resist distractions, delay gratification, and align their actions with higher values and objectives. Self-confidence, on the other hand, defined as the belief in one’s abilities and potential, acts as a psychological catalyst that fuels persistence, resilience, and the courage to face challenges. This review highlights that these two constructs are not independent but exist in a dynamic and reciprocal relationship. Enhanced self-discipline strengthens competence and mastery, which in turn fosters confidence, while greater confidence sustains the motivation necessary for disciplined effort, especially in the face of setbacks. Drawing on insights from psychology, neuroscience, and contemplative traditions, this paper situates Rajyoga Meditation as a unique practice that nurtures both qualities by cultivating conscious awareness, inner stability, detachment from negative influences, and alignment with higher purpose. The review critically examines existing empirical studies, identifies methodological gaps, and underscores the need for more rigorous research on Rajyoga-based interventions in educational and youth development settings. The findings suggest that integrating Rajyoga Meditation into academic and social contexts can significantly contribute to shaping disciplined, confident, and value-driven youth prepared to meet contemporary challenges.
