TEACHER EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN INDIA: NAVIGATING POLICY IMPERATIVES AND IMPLEMENTATION CHALLENGES IN THE WAKE OF NEP 2020

Teacher Education for Sustainable Development (TESD) is a critical lever for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in a diverse and rapidly developing nation like India. This paper analyzes the challenges and opportunities inherent in integrating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into Indian teacher education programs. Despite the strong policy impetus provided by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, significant systemic barriers persist. These include inadequate training for teacher educators, a disconnect between global sustainability concepts and local contexts, rigid pedagogical traditions, and institutional constraints that hinder effective implementation. Furthermore, the abstraction of sustainability principles often makes practical classroom application difficult. Conversely, the paper identifies transformative opportunities to leverage TESD for meaningful educational change. These are anchored in the visionary framework of NEP 2020, which promotes interdisciplinary learning, experiential pedagogy, and continuous professional development focused on sustainability. The growing global emphasis on SDGs, the potential of technology-driven educational platforms, and opportunities for community engagement present a conducive environment for innovation. This paper argues that by adopting strategic, holistic approaches—such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and systems mapping—TESD can move from a peripheral initiative to a core component of teacher preparation. Key recommendations include the development of national ESD guidelines tailored to regional needs, dedicated capacity-building for teacher educators, and the creation of contextualized learning resources. Ultimately, this study concludes that by systematically addressing existing gaps and capitalizing on emerging opportunities, TESD can empower teachers as agents of change, equipping them to foster a generation capable of building a just, inclusive, and sustainable future.
