PHARMACOTHERAPY FOR METABOLIC DISEASES: EVIDENCE AND STRATEGIES IN METABOLIC SYNDROME, OBESITY, GOUT, AND CHRONIC ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY
The burden of disease in the modern world is largely caused by metabolic disorders, including metabolic syndrome, obesity, gout, and chronic adrenal insufficiency. Although lifestyle changes are still crucial, many individuals need medication assistance. I summarize the evidence from high-quality reviews and meta-analyses for medication treatments in each illness, point out areas of strong and weak information, and offer a useful, patient-centered choice framework in this overview. Key findings include: urate lowering therapy is central for gout, but obesity blunts response; modified-release glucocorticoid regimens show modest metabolic advantages in chronic adrenal insufficiency, but high-quality evidence is scarce; most drug therapy for metabolic syndrome is component based, with relatively few trials addressing syndrome reversal; and newer agents (e.g., GLP 1 receptor agonists and phentermine-topiramate) produce the most robust weight loss in obesity. The article advocates for integrated, risk‑adapted pharmacotherapy and underscores major areas needing future research.
