LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE EDUCATION AS A VEHICLE FOR FOSTERING COMMUNITY UNDERSTANDING AND COLLABORATION IN 21ST -CENTURY INDIA

In the context of 21st-century India, characterized by linguistic plurality and socio-cultural diversity, language and literature education play a vital role in nurturing community understanding and collaboration. This paper explores how the study of language and literature functions as a bridge among India’s multiple linguistic, cultural, and ideological communities. It examines how educational frameworks—rooted in inclusive language pedagogy and culturally responsive literary study—contribute to inter-community empathy, civic engagement, and collective identity. Drawing upon sociolinguistic theory, postcolonial literary criticism, and educational case studies, the paper argues that language and literature are not mere academic subjects but vital instruments for democratic coexistence and intercultural dialogue. The paper also considers the implications of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, digital learning platforms, and multilingual pedagogies for fostering harmony and collaboration among diverse learners. The findings suggest that integrating multilingual education with literary humanism enhances students’ capacity for empathy, critical dialogue, and civic participation—core ingredients of a collaborative and inclusive India.
