ODISSI: TRADITION, TRANSFORMATION, AND RELEVANCE IN THE CONTEMPORARY AGE
Odissi, one of the eight recognized classical dance forms of India, represents a synthesis of tradition, spiritual expression, and artistic discipline. Over time, this ancient form has witnessed significant changes in terms of costume, stagecraft, pedagogy, and public engagement. Despite the advent of a fast-paced, instant-gratification culture dominated by social media, the enduring relevance of Odissi lies in its rootedness in literature, sculpture, music, and the emotive connection between performer and audience. This paper explores the evolution of Odissi, the rigorous training required for practitioners, the significance of rasa (aesthetic flavour), and the role of abhinaya (expressive gesture) in sustaining its cultural and performative richness.
