GEOGRAPHICAL AND DEMOGRAPHIC PATTERNS OF MUGA SILK: AN ANALYTICAL STUDY OF FOODPLANT AREA, REARERS, AND PRODUCTION IN ASSAM

The Muga Silk industry of Assam represents a unique intersection of ecology, economy and culture, yet its sustainability faces certain challenges due to environmental degradation and socio-economic change. This study analyses the inter-relationship between three key variables, area under Muga plantation, number of rearers, and production of Muga silk, over a fifteen year period (from 2009-10 to 2023-24). Drawing upon secondary data from government sources and sericulture reports, the research employs trend analysis and comparative interpretation to examine the dynamics which shape the industry’s growth and decline. The interdependence of these three variables shows that ecological sustainability, active human engagement, and equitable economic returns have to coexist for this industry to thrive. The paper concludes that to safeguard the Muga Silk industry, an integrated approach that harmonises environmental management, community participation, and cultural preservation has to be adopted, to ensure the continuity of this industry that is a vital part of the Assamese identity and rural resilience.
