Agentic AI for Agroecosystem Restoration: Dynamic Stewardship Through Intelligent Prioritization
The EU's Nature Restoration Law (NRL) mandates extensive agroecosystem restoration, presenting significant challenges in terms of resource allocation and planning. Traditional prioritization methods, which rely on static Earth Observation data and Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA), often fall short due to their inability to account for dynamic feedback, inherent uncertainties, and the intricate interplay between human and natural systems. This paper advocates for a transformative shift towards dynamic, adaptive stewardship, powered by Agentic AI. We propose a Multi-Agent System (MAS) that employs specialized AI agents. This system integrates real-time environmental monitoring, biophysical simulations (such as InVEST and SWAT), and socio-economic Agent-Based Models (ABMs) to construct a "digital twin" of the agroecosystem. A key component, the Strategic Prioritization Agent, utilizes Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) to interact with this digital twin. This interaction enables the exploration of various scenarios to identify optimal, state-dependent strategies for achieving NRL objectives. This innovative approach redefines prioritization, moving from static geographical maps to dynamic, continuously evolving policies. It facilitates ongoing, socio-ecologically integrated optimization and adaptive management. While acknowledging challenges related to computational demands, explainability, and governance, this framework represents a crucial advancement in environmental governance, aiming for more effective, efficient, and resilient agroecosystem restoration.
