Awareness of HIV Prevention Among University Students
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) continues to be a global health concern, particularly among young adults who are at increased risk due to unsafe sexual practices and inadequate awareness. University students represent a crucial target group for HIV prevention efforts because of their active social interactions and transitional stage of independence,This study aims to assess the level of awareness, knowledge, and preventive practices regarding HIV among university students, and to identify existing misconceptions that may hinder effective prevention, descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among university students aged 18–25 years using a structured questionnaire. Data were collected on socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge of HIV transmission and prevention, sources of information, and attitudes toward HIV testing and safe sex practices,Findings revealed that while 80% of students had general awareness of HIV/AIDS, only 45% demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of transmission routes and prevention strategies. Social media and peers were the main sources of information, while misconceptions such as HIV transmission through mosquito bites or casual contact persisted. Only 20% of participants reported ever undergoing HIV testing, and 55% consistently used condoms during sexual activity,Although awareness of HIV among university students is relatively high, significant knowledge gaps and risky behaviors remain. Strengthening university-based HIV education, promoting regular testing, and addressing misconceptions through peer-led programs and digital platforms are essential to enhance prevention and reduce future HIV infections.
