Artificial intelligence in medical education: applications, development, and reflections

Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic challenging traditional bedside and classroom teaching, and alongside the comprehensive advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, medical education is undergoing a profound transformation. AI has increasingly integrated into the construction of new medical education systems. Notably, in postgraduate medical education which grounded in adult learning principles, the demand for and application of AI-assisted learning have exponential growth. This article reviewed the application of various AI-driven teaching methods in medical education, including simulation-based training, virtual reality (VR), adaptive learning systems, and large medical language models. It further analyzes the current imbalance between theoretical research and practical implementation of AI in medical education, aiming to provide more comprehensive recommendations to support the digital and intelligent transformation of medical education.
