Investigation of Maternal and Child Deaths: Educational Strategy in Primary Care in Southern Brazil

Abstract Background Worldwide, the establishment of mortality committees and death investigations is an essential strategy for identifying factors contributing to deaths, particularly among mothers and children. Objectives To report the experience of a continuing education strategy implemented by the Municipal Committee for the Prevention of Maternal, Infant, and Fetal Mortality (CMPMMIF) in a municipality in the Southern region of Brazil, aimed at professionals in Primary Health Care teams. Results As part of a continuing education strategy in maternal and child health, the Committee developed a script of questions for Primary Health Care teams, with the goal of investigating maternal, infant, or fetal deaths of families within the coverage area of the Basic Health Unit (UBS). Each case is investigated and debated in team meetings before being analyzed by the Committee. To obtain the necessary information, health professionals conduct home visits to affected families and analyze medical records. With this information in hand, they discuss and issue an opinion in team meetings about the identified failures, probable causes, preventability of death, and finally, suggest measures to prevent new cases. This process promotes dialogue, the exchange of information and knowledge among health professionals, contributing to continuing education. Conclusions The proposal to create an investigation and debate script on maternal, infant, and fetal deaths for health teams was an effective strategy to promote the continuing education of Primary Health Care professionals. Furthermore, it allowed health teams to recognize the importance of care actions in prenatal and child care, by suggesting effective measures to prevent deaths and promote maternal and child health. We hope that this essay inspires managers and health professionals to invest in conversations and dialogical discussions, expanding the potential for transforming practices. Key messages • Maternal and child death investigation script: effective strategy for continuing education and prevention of new deaths. • Municipal Committee promotes dialogue and learning among health professionals, positively impacting maternal and child health.
