Mental health and social inequality: Family, school and community

Abstract In the second presentation of the workshop, we draw on expertise from health promotion, positive youth development, child development and social epidemiology to address important contextual arenas for social inequality. Using data from two longitudinal studies: 1) the Bergen Child Study which is a longitudinal cohort study following children from early school age to high school, and 2) the COMPLETE study, following adolescents through high school, in the age period 15 to 19. Here we investigate how family structure, social connectedness, social support and civic engagement are related to social inequalities in adolescent mental health. We welcome a discussion on the complexity of social relations and contexts in relation to social inequalities and adolescent mental health.
