Preconception Health Profiling of University Students in Cyprus: the PrePARE for Life Stu

Abstract Introduction Preconception health is critical for improving the chronic disease risk trajectory of future generations. Yet, the health profile and behaviours of adults across the reproductive lifespan are not well explored. The PrePARE for LIFE study conducted in collaboration with the Biobank of Cyprus, adopts a holistic approach to identify the needs and challenges associated with optimizing health in time for conception. Methods PrePARE for Life is a multi-phase study employing a mixed-methods design to assess multiple biological, psychological and social factors in a cohort of 400 university students aged 18-45 years. Phase A evaluates lifestyle parameters using validated tools (nutrition, physical activity, sleep, use of hazardous substances) and assesses anthropometric measures (body composition, waist circumference) and metabolic indicators (blood lipids). Phases B and C assess mental and reproductive health and behavioural intentions. Qualitative methods with focus groups are employed to gain insights into the barriers and facilitators to adopting healthy lifestyles. Results Pilot data analysis of Phase A amongst 99 health science students (mean age 21 years, 81% female) shows that 72% have low adherence to Mediterranean diet (median MEDAS score 4/14), 59% have low physical activity scores (IPAQ), 22% are everyday smokers (GTTS tool) and 16% are hazardous drinkers (AUDIT-C). Only 37% have good sleep quality (median global PSQI score 7/21). In terms of physical health, 43.4% have a BMI above 25 kg/m2, 12.7% have total cholesterol levels higher than 200 mg/dL, 36.5% have LDL levels exceeding 100 mg/dl and 6.7% have triglyceride levels above 150 mg/dL. Discussion Health behaviours of individuals belonging to the preconception public health perspective appear sub-optimal, underscoring the need for adopting a comprehensive approach to assessing health needs prior to developing evidence-based interventions for health promotion across the reproductive lifespan Key messages • While preconception health is critical for reducing the chronic disease risk trajectory, the health profile of adults across the reproductive age span remains sub-optimal. • PrePARE for LIFE holistically assesses the needs and challenges for optimizing health in time for conception to guide the development of effective preconception population health interventions.
