Language and Choice: A Stylistic Investigation of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness
This study examines Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness through a stylistic lens, focusing on the linguistic and structural features that shape its meaning. Using Leech and Short’s (2007) stylistic framework and data from AntConc software (Anthony, 2022), the analysis explores Conrad’s use of vocabulary and grammar. Findings reveal that Conrad’s polyglot background influences his complex style—marked by long, polysyllabic words, idiomatic expressions, fragmented narration, and intricate sentence structures. These linguistic choices intensify the novel’s themes of obscurity and darkness. The study concludes that language plays a vital role in literary interpretation, as stylistic choices enhance meaning and deepen understanding of the text.
