The Evolutionary Advantage: Why Microbial Chemistry Wins in Drug Discovery & Approval
The journey to a new medicine is one of the most expensive and failure‑prone endeavors in modern science. While traditional discovery has focused on forging molecules from scratch, a more efficient path exists: harnessing microbial natural products (NPs)—molecules already refined by evolution. A capitalized‑cost analysis shows that developing a drug from a synthetic, non‑natural product (Non‑NP) lead costs an estimated $1,487.7 million. Starting with a microbial NP reduces that to about $446.5 million. The ≈ $1,041.2 million (~$1.04 billion) delta is a step‑change, not an increment, and justifies a strategic shift toward nature’s chemistry.
