Integrating ICT Tools for Active Learning in Architecture Education: A Pedagogical Transformation in the Indian Context
AbstractThis study explores how Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools are reshaping architecturaleducation in India by supporting more active, student-centered learning. Drawing data from 103 undergraduatestudents and in-depth interviews with 9 faculty members across three architecture colleges in India, it examines howplatforms like Google Classroom, SWAYAM, video-based tutorials, and collaborative tools like Miro areinfluencing both studio and theory-based learning. The research combines survey analysis with classroomobservations and faculty perspectives to understand what’s working and what’s not in integrating ICT into theIndian architecture curriculum. Students showed a clear preference for blended learning, especially when itsupported flexibility and visual learning. Faculty noted improvements in student participation and design feedbackbut also raised concerns about infrastructure gaps, uneven digital access, and limited training opportunities. Thepaper concludes with realistic suggestions for Indian architecture institutions, focusing on teacher readiness, digitalcontent curation, and the need for flexible academic policies that support experimentation with ICT in architecturalpedagogy.
