Enhancing Writing Cohesion Through AI Writing Tools Insights from Lebanese Middle School Classrooms

This qualitative study investigates how Artificial Intelligence (AI) writing tools support thedevelopment of cohesion and organization in middle school students’ English writing.Conducted in a Lebanese private school with Grade 7 and 8 students, the study explores how AIplatforms such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, and Writerly assist learners in improving sentenceconnection, transition use, and overall textual flow. Data were gathered through writing samples, teacher reflections, and student interviews to examine how AI-assisted feedback interacts withpedagogical mediation and learner autonomy.Findings reveal that AI feedback enhances lexical and grammatical cohesion, fosters iterativerevision, and increases students’ confidence in written expression. However, the study alsohighlights challenges including overreliance, superficial correction, and the need for teacherscaffolding to ensure authentic learning. The research concludes that AI functions mosteffectively as a pedagogical ally, reinforcing reflective writing, coherence, and motivation whilemaintaining the teacher’s role as a facilitator of meaning-making.
