Innovative Passive Cooling and Optical Optimization System for Photovoltaic Panels A Low-Cost Scalable Solution
The system features a 3D prismatic glass structure (alternating triangular and rectangular prisms, 5 mm height, 10 mm spacing, low-iron borosilicate etched or molded) thermally bonded to monocrystalline PV cells via alumina-filled silicone adhesive (0.5-1 mm layer, thermal conductivity 1-2 W/m·K), topped with an anti-reflection screen (3-4 mm float glass with MgF₂/SiO₂ coating, <2% reflectance 400-1100 nm) forming a 15-20 mm air channel with base/top vents (10% area). For equatorial setups, a vertical PVC draft tube (1 m wide × 30 cm high × 15-20 mm deep) attaches to the top vent for stack effect. Operation relies on natural convection: ambient air enters base vents, absorbs heat via turbulent flow over prisms (Reynolds ~2500), and exits warm, while prisms refract light to minimize cosine losses (+20% capture). Fabrication uses standard extrusion, vacuum deposition, and clamp assembly (10 min/panel, <3 kg added weight), with bulk cost <$44/300W panel. Advantages include 15-25% efficiency gain (from 18% to 22-23%), 12°C average cooling, zero energy input, UV/IP67 durability (5-10 years), and CO₂ reduction (1.5 tons/year/panel).
