The Closed Gates of Physics Publishing — and the Quiet Revolution of AI
The Closed Gates of Physics Publishing — and the Quiet Revolution of AIJ. P. Blankert (2025) This essay exposes the structural barriers that make modern physics one of the most closed disciplines for innovation — and shows how artificial intelligence is quietly reopening those gates. It argues that the scientific establishment, while publicly promoting “open science,” continues to operate through hidden walls of institutional endorsement, access restrictions, and prohibitive publication fees. Through examples such as arXiv’s endorsement system, the economics of pay-to-publish open-access journals, and the invisibility of independent researchers on Google Scholar, the piece reveals how academic legitimacy has become a function of affiliation rather than merit. Yet it also highlights the quiet revolution underway: AI models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and others can now traverse paywalls, summarize research across publishers, and provide independent scholars with the analytical reach once reserved for universities. CERN’s Zenodo is presented as the first true infrastructure of equality — granting independent thinkers a DOI, visibility, and permanence identical to institutional scientists. In this new era, AI becomes the university of one: a global peer, a library without gates, and a catalyst for re-democratizing discovery. The essay calls for a transformation of scientific publishing — from institutional privilege to intellectual openness.
