The Role of Continuous Assurances in Optimizing the Use of Accounting Data in ERP Systems to Enhance Governance Amid the Shift to Artificial Intelligence in Digital Transformation
AbstractThis research aims to examine the role of continuous assurance as a control methodology toachieve optimal use of accounting data within Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, and to analyze how continuous assurance can enhance the accuracy and reliability of suchdata. The study also seeks to explore the impact of applying this methodology onstrengthening governance and internal control within organizations. The research adopts the descriptive-analytical method as the most appropriate approach forstudying the role of continuous assurance in improving the quality of accounting data withinERP systems. The findings highlight several key results, most notably that continuousassurance contributes to ensuring the effectiveness of automated internal controls and theaccuracy of accounting data by continuously verifying financial transactions, therebyreducing errors and ensuring consistent information across all departments of theorganization. The integration between ERP systems and continuous assurance mechanisms helps improvethe quality of financial reports, facilitating timely and accurate decision-making based on reliable data. Continuous assurance also enhances financial compliance by providing real-time monitoring of financial transactions, supporting adherence to international accounting standards such as the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and GenerallyAccepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).Additionally, it reduces accounting errors through data analysis mechanisms embedded inERP systems, which in turn mitigates organizational and legal risks and decreases thelikelihood of financial fraud. The study also shows that continuous assurance providesupdated and accurate financial data, enabling senior management to make strategic decisionsbased on trustworthy information. It further supports the analysis of financial trends andforecasting of future risks, thereby improving financial planning and promoting businesssustainability. The study recommends that organizations adopt advanced technological solutions that enablereal-time or near real-time continuous assurance processes. This contributes to enhancing thequality of accounting data, reducing errors, and paving the way for the use of artificialintelligence and big data analytics to support continuous assurance processes and detectfinancial manipulation and fraud early through predictive analysis of user behavior patternsand patterns of resource utilization. This calls for providing specialized training programs for internal auditors and accountants onthe latest technologies and tools used in continuous assurance, and encouraging organizationsto embrace a culture of digital transformation and raise employee awareness of theimportance of continuous assurance in improving financial and administrativeperformance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of its kind to address themethodology of continuous assurance to achieve optimal use of accounting data available inERP systems.
