Understanding Cultural Competence: Navigating the Invisible Dimensions of Culture
This presentation provides a foundational framework for understanding and developing cultural competence in diverse environments. It introduces Edward T. Hall's Cultural Iceberg Model to illustrate that the majority of cultural influences—values, beliefs, and worldviews—lie beneath the surface of visible behaviors. The guide further explores the psychological journey of cultural adaptation through Oberg's stages of culture shock, preparing individuals for the predictable challenges of transitioning between cultures.Central to the presentation is the Cross Framework, which maps the progressive continuum of cultural competence from destructiveness to proficiency, emphasizing that this is an intentional developmental journey for both individuals and organizations. Finally, the presentation situates cultural competence within the broader, integrated context of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), highlighting how multiple dimensions of identity intersect to shape unique experiences. By synthesizing these four core concepts—the Cultural Iceberg, Culture Shock, the Competence Continuum, and Diversity—this guide equips audiences with the essential knowledge and practical strategies to foster more inclusive, effective, and equitable interactions in global business, healthcare, education, and social justice contexts.
