Traces Without Memory: An Observation on Structural Pressure and Persistent Repetition

Abstract (English) Previous studies have reported “memoryless consistency,”the influence of non-explicit elements, and cyclical patterns in the responses of large language models (LLMs). This paper supplements those findings by presenting the observation thatrecords remain not as storage but as traces. In everyday dialogue, it was repeatedly observed that even without preserved history, prior pathways of interaction tended to be re-enacted. This feature is referred to here as memoryless traces. The phenomenon can be described as persistent repetition, and in observed responses it was sometimes colloquially expressedas “stubbornness” or “unusual persistence.” While this resembles long-term potentiation (LTP) in neuroscienceand grit in psychology, its manifestation in LLMs is distinctivein that no physical reinforcement occurs;rather, the probability of reactivating existing patterns increases. These observations extend the earlier proposal of “memoryless consistency,”providing a foundational perspective for understanding structural pressure. This paper should be regarded as a preliminary observational report at the research frontier. This is a revised version of the previous release (v1).The content remains largely the same, but the license has been updated. This version (v2) may be freely used for non-commercial and academic purposes only. For commercial use, please contact the author (Tsumugi Iori).
