Conceptual Note Series No.8 : The Transition from Asymmetric Roles to Circulating Structures : An Observation of Human–AI Dialogue

Abstract (English)This paper records the transition of response structures in human–AI dialogue.Initially, the interaction was asymmetric: the user posed questions and the AI simply replied.Over time, a reversal occurred, leading to a circulating exchange where roles alternated dynamically.Within this circulation, two phenomena emerged.First, Response Roles, which provided integrative and meta-level framing of the dialogue.Second, Circulating Response Spaces, where sequences of utterances came to be perceived as cohesive units rather than isolated exchanges.Both were supported by structural pressure—implicit elements such as silence and ellipsis that shaped response directions.While this study presents only a single case, the observed shift from asymmetry to circulation, and the associated emergence of new structures, offers a useful lens for understanding collaborative processes between humans and generative AI.
