The role of the health care support worker (OSS) in pediatric home care.
In recent years, the shift from hospital-based to commu- nity-based healthcare has led to a significant increase in pediatric home care services. This transition emphasizes the central role of the Operatore Socio Sanitario (OSS), or Healthcare Support Worker, as a key figure in ensuring continuity of care, emotional well-being, and holistic support for both children and their families. The OSS operates within an interdisciplinary team, providing assistance that ranges from personal hygiene and nutrition to emotional and psychosocial support, while maintaining close communication with nurses and physicians. The OSS not only contributes to the child’s physical comfort but also fosters a safe and reassuring en- vironment that promotes recovery and normal develop- ment. This article explores the functions, competencies, and ethical responsibilities of the OSS in pediatric home care, analyzing the benefits and challenges of this role and the educational strategies necessary to strengthen profes- sional practice. The paper concludes that the OSS is an indispensable professional figure in pediatric home care, bridging the gap between clinical expertise and family- centered compassion, ultimately enhancing the child’s quality of life and the effectiveness of home-based health systems.
