SPECIALIZED REPORTING AND DEMOCRATIC ACCOUNTABILITY: EXAMINING MEDIA ROLES IN GOVERNMENT, CORRUPTION, HEALTH, JUDICIARY AND INSECURITY IN NIGERIA
This study assessed the specialized reporting and democratic accountability: examining media roles in government, corruption, health, judiciary and insecurity in Nigeria. This study adopted the pragmatism research philosophy. The study employed a mixed-methods research design, combining survey research with in-depth interviews to generate both measurable data and contextual insights. The population of the study consists of 5,214 registered journalists in Nigeria drawn from the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ, 2025) across print, broadcast and online media organizations, representing those actively involved in public affairs reporting. Using the Taro Yamane formula at 95% confidence level, the study derives a sample size of 372 respondents for the quantitative component, while 15 investigative and specialized journalists were purposively selected for qualitative interviews to provide deeper insights. A multi-stage sampling technique was used, combining stratified sampling to categorize journalists by media type (print, broadcast and online), followed by proportionate sampling to ensure equal representation across geopolitical zones, and simple random sampling to select respondents. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire for the quantitative survey and a semi-structured interview guide. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis to determine the influence of specialized reporting on democratic accountability, while the qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and narratives. The findings revealed that specialized governance reporting significantly promoted transparency and accountability in Nigeria as 82% of respondents agreed in the quantitative survey that media reports increased scrutiny of public officials, while interview evidence confirmed that journalists consistently exposed abandoned projects and misuse of public funds, compelling government responses. The study concluded that specialized governance reporting plays a vital role in promoting transparency and accountability in Nigeria by exposing government actions to public scrutiny and strengthening democratic governance mechanisms. The study recommended that the Federal Ministry of Information and the Nigerian Guild of Editors should strengthen frameworks that promote access to government information to enhance effective governance reporting and transparency
