Moving Funding Metadata Forward: Community Round Table Presentation

This presentation documents the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information’s Community Round Table on Funding Metadata, co-organised with Crossref. The session brought together funders, publishers, infrastructure and technology providers to surface barriers in capturing and depositing funding data, and to outline practical steps toward better coverage, quality and interoperability of funding metadata across the scholarly ecosystem. Speakers / contributors:Hans de Jonge (NWO), Katharina Rieck (FWF), Zoë Ancion (ANR), Bianca Kramer (Barcelona Declaration), Kora Korzec (Crossref), Bárbara Rivera López (Barcelona Declaration). What the session covers: Why open funding metadata matters for researchers, funders, publishers, and society (transparency, attribution, impact tracking, accountability, and reuse). Current state of funding metadata in Crossref and differences across publishers and workflows. Practical challenges in submission and production systems (collecting from authors vs. extracting from full text; retaining metadata downstream). The growing role of persistent identifiers for grants (Grant IDs) and the Crossref Grant Linking System. Next steps: standardised funding statements, improved system implementations, and coordinated actions among funders, publishers, and technology providers.
