Writing for Machines: How Symbolic Expression Can Reduce Energy Use in LLMs
The exponential growth of large language models (LLMs) has intensified global concerns about the environmental cost of artificial intelligence. Every token processed by an LLM consumes computational resources, and at scale, even marginal inefficiencies compound into measurable energy expenditure. This paper introduces the concept of character-level efficiency — an approach that reconsiders the orthographic and symbolic structure of human text as a pathway toward sustainable AI. It proposes that intentional use of compact linguistic forms — including characters such as ½, {}, >, as well as emojis, mathematical symbols, and controlled whitespace — can significantly reduce the number of tokens required for both training and inference. By compressing semantic content into fewer textual units, token count and energy consumption can be simultaneously reduced without compromising expressive power. This study explores how symbolic expression, orthographic minimalism, and character shortening can form a token economy — a practical, language-level strategy for greener machine learning.
