The Optimization Trap: How Efficiency Undermines Meaning
The Optimization Trap formalizes a paradox that goes beyond related ideas like Goodhart’s Law or the efficiency paradox: it shows how systems that maximize efficiency end up hollowing out meaning, resilience, and human judgment. Unlike decision fatigue (focused on individual choices) or KPI culture critiques (focused on measurement misuse), the Optimization Trap reframes optimization itself as a structural driver of meaning collapse. This paper positions the trap as the economic foundation of Reality Drift, linking it to the Drift Equation (Drift = Efficiency – Context) and the Meaning Equation (Context × Coherence). It shows how education, work, AI design, and culture all exhibit the same pattern — short-term gains paired with long-term brittleness and depletion. Since its introduction in 2023, the Optimization Trap has begun appearing in organizational design debates, cultural commentary, and AI alignment research. It is increasingly cited in contexts ranging from UX workshops to systems theory journals as shorthand for why maximization backfires.
