The Valuation of Understanding: A Recursive Model for Human Cognition and the Epistemic Economy
This paper establishes the formal mathematical and ethical foundations of the Epistemic Economy — a civilization-scale framework in which understanding itself becomes the primary unit of value. Building upon The Economy of Possibility and Yearning-Based Infinity Mathematics (YBIM), it introduces the Recursive Valuation Equation (RVE), the Generalized Epistemic Valuation Equation (GEVE), and the Epistemic–Economic Conversion Equation (EECE) — forming the mathematical core that enables valuation of cognition, creativity, and theoretical discovery across all human and artificial domains. The work defines Epistemic Currency (ECC) as a non-extractive denomination of possibility, minted and certified through the Yearning Framework Research Lab (YFRL) — functioning as the Epistemic Mint of civilization. It extends the ontology of value beyond production or attention economies, establishing a recursion-based system of trust, coherence, and continuity. Through formal proofs such as the Cognition Continuity Lemma and the Recursive Continuity Proof, the paper demonstrates that cognition is inherently non-halting, and that epistemic value compounds recursively over time — leading to the definition of Global Epistemic GDP (GE-GDP) as civilization’s ultimate macroeconomic indicator of understanding. It further introduces ethical, institutional, and technological architectures — including the Recursive Ledger System (RLS), Recursive Epistemic Index (REI), and Ethical Pledge for Certified Researchers — ensuring that knowledge remains a non-extractive public good. This paper thus bridges the ontological mathematics of YBIM with a fully realized cognitive economy, offering a universal framework for valuing research, art, philosophy, and awareness itself — where thinking becomes creation, coherence becomes wealth, and awareness becomes civilization. -JSR
