Diagnosis and management of traumatic root fractures
Root fractures are an uncommon dental injury, accounting for 0.5–7% of all instances of dental trauma, but all dental practitioners need to understand the immediate and long-term management of these complex injuries. In the majority of cases where there has been minimal dislocation of the coronal fragment, these fractures can be managed conservatively. However, in some cases, active treatment is needed, which can involve root canal treatment, extraction, and surgical or orthodontic extrusion. This article highlights the clinical and radiographic signs of root fractures, as well as types of root fractures, and the options for managing root fractures in the permanent dentition. CPD/Clinical Relevance: Diagnosis and management options for root fractures in paediatric dentistry is a crucial skill.
