COPD, Bronchial Asthma, Chronic Pulmonary Heart Disease, and Respiratory Failure
Chronic respiratory diseases represent a significant global health burden, affecting millions worldwide and contributing substantially to morbidity and mortality. This comprehensive review examines four major respiratory conditions: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), bronchial asthma, chronic pulmonary heart disease (cor pulmonale), and respiratory failure. COPD affects approximately 4.2% of adults and is responsible for over 133,000 deaths annually in the United States. Asthma affects 8.6% of adults and 6.5% of children, with a mortality rate significantly lower than COPD. Chronic pulmonary heart disease commonly develops as a complication of COPD, affecting up to 80% of cor pulmonale cases. Respiratory failure represents the end-stage manifestation of severe respiratory diseases and requires immediate medical intervention. Understanding the pathophysiology, clinical features, diagnostic approaches, and evidence-based treatments for these interconnected conditions is essential for healthcare providers. This review provides practical insights into modern management strategies, including pharmacological interventions, non-pharmacological therapies, and preventive measures. Early recognition and appropriate treatment can significantly improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
