Chemotherapy Explained: A Realistic Guide for Patients and Caregivers / Cancer Myths and Misconceptions
Many myths and misconceptions about cancer persist in public discourse, often fueled by misinformation, outdated beliefs, or pseudoscience. These misconceptions can create unnecessary fear, lead patients to make harmful decisions, and reduce adherence to evidence-based treatments. This article series examines some of the most common cancer-related myths — including false beliefs about sugar feeding cancer, artificial sweeteners causing cancer, cancer being contagious, alkaline diets preventing cancer, and red wine or “miracle cures” from specific countries. By reviewing the latest scientific evidence, we explain why these claims are misleading or false, and clarify how cancer actually develops and responds to treatment. Our goal is to empower patients and caregivers with reliable, accessible information to support informed decision-making and reduce anxiety throughout the cancer journey.
