Modular Agent Capabilities in Large Language Models: An Analysis of Anthropic's Claude Skills Framework with Applications in Document Processing and Retrieval-Augmented Generation
AbstractAnthropic’s Claude Skills, introduced in October 2025, enable modular packaging of instructions, scripts, and resources into reusable folders that large language models load on-demand for task-specific enhancement. This framework employs a tiered loading mechanism—metadata scanning followed by selective activation—to optimize token usage and integrate with existing features like Model Context Protocol (MCP) and subagents. Community implementations demonstrate efficiency gains in context management, with a case study on processing the 2025 Philippine national budget PDF illustrating semantic chunking for vector embeddings in retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems. Analysis revealsadvantages in composability and portability across platforms, though limitations persist in handling complex document structures and continual learning. Supported by empirical comparisons and research on RAG chunking strategies, this work evaluates Skills’ role in advancing agent architectures toward self-improving systems.Statistically Improbable Phrases (SIPs): AI Agents, Agent Architectures, Agent Skills, Claude Skills, Context Protocol, Document Processing, for RAG, Large Language, Large Language Models, Language Models, Model Context, Model Context Protocol, Philippine Budget, Retrieval-Augmented Generation, Semantic Chunking, Self-Evolving Agents, Vector Embeddings
