Blockchain-Based Accounting & Auditing: Opportunities and Challenges for Indian Firms

This study investigates the potential of blockchain technology to transform accounting and auditing practices in India. Through a mixed-method approach, combining survey responses from 102 accounting professionals and six in-depth expert interviews, the research identifies key opportunities such as enhanced transparency, real-time auditing, fraud prevention, and improved stakeholder trust. It also highlights the major barriers to adoption, including regulatory uncertainty, high implementation costs, and lack of skilled professionals. Statistical analysis reveals that awareness of blockchain strongly correlates with recognition of its benefits, while regulatory ambiguity reduces adoption intent. The findings offer practical recommendations for firms, auditors, regulators, and academic institutions to foster blockchain adoption in India’s accounting ecosystem.
