From the Damnonii to Strathclyde: The Enduring Kingdom of the Clyde (c. 200 – 850 AD)
This study reconstructs the transformation of the Roman-era Damnonii civitas into the early-medieval kingdom of Alt Clut (Strathclyde). Drawing on classical geography, archaeology from Dumbarton Rock and Govan, early annals, and linguistic analysis, it demonstrates that Alt Clut was the direct institutional descendant of the Damnonii polity. Cross-disciplinary evidence — geospatial, archaeological, onomastic, and genetic — shows near-total continuity of territory, administration, and culture from the 2nd to 9th centuries AD. The Clyde basin therefore represents one of Europe’s longest continuous native kingdoms, forming the deep substrate of later Scottish dynasties such as the Dubh kings and the Douglases.
