THE ROLE AND ADVANTAGES OF LASER TECHNOLOGIES IN THE TREATMENT OF PERI-IMPLANTITIS AND PERI-MUCOSITIS
Peri-implantitis and peri-mucositis are common inflammatory conditions that compromise the longevity of dental implants. Traditional treatment methods, such as mechanical debridement and antiseptic rinses, often fail to provide long-term success due to difficulties in thoroughly decontaminating implant surfaces. In recent years, laser-assisted therapy has gained prominence as an adjunctive or alternative treatment modality for peri-implant diseases. This paper reviews and analyzes the effectiveness of different laser systems—particularly diode and Er:YAG lasers—in treating peri-implantitis and peri-mucositis. Clinical outcomes, such as reductions in probing depth, bleeding on probing, and microbial load, as well as improvements in clinical attachment and patient-reported comfort, are discussed. Diode lasers have shown promise in treating peri-mucositis by reducing inflammation and accelerating soft tissue healing. Er:YAG lasers have been particularly effective in peri-implantitis treatment, providing efficient surface decontamination without altering implant topography. This review also highlights the biostimulatory effects of laser therapy, which can promote tissue regeneration and reduce the need for invasive surgical interventions. While laser therapy shows significant potential, its success depends on appropriate technique, proper training, and patient-specific considerations. Overall, laser-assisted approaches can enhance clinical outcomes, improve patient satisfaction, and offer a minimally invasive solution for managing peri-implant diseases.
