Orthodontic Evidence Series by A.Hassan, Vol. 1 – Is There an Established Ideal Functional or Static Occlusion for Orthodontic Patients?

Abstract:This publication is part of the Orthodontic Evidence Series by A.Hassan (Vol. 1), an academic initiative aimed at synthesising and critically analysing the orthodontic literature into concise, evidence-based notes for postgraduate orthodontic residents. The first volume addresses the question: Is there an established ideal functional or static occlusion for orthodontic patients? Drawing on current orthodontic and dental literature, this work explores definitions, diagnostic criteria, and the evolution of occlusal concepts from both functional and static perspectives. The analysis integrates findings from systematic reviews, cephalometric and 3D studies, and expert consensus, highlighting the variability in defining “ideal occlusion” and its clinical implications for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. Each volume in this series is designed to support evidence-based learning and promote critical appraisal among orthodontic clinicians and researchers worldwide.
