Expanding the Frontiers of Freshwater Sponges: First Record of Ephydatia fluviatilis in Yucatán's Cenotes

Cartel presentado en el 12th World Sponge Conference que se llevó acabo en Vila do Conde, Portugal del 9 al 13 de septiembre, 2025 Abstract in English The cenotes in the state of Yucatán (south of Mexico) are aquatic ecosystems with unique karst formations that harbor specialized communities and serve as biodiversity reserves. Although various studies have documented the aquatic fauna of these systems, knowledge about the biodiversity of freshwater sponges in cenotes remains limited and left out for more than 50 years. This study aimed to document the presence of Ephydatia fluviatilis in Yucatán cenotes, updating its distribution and providing information on its morphology. Sampling was conducted in the Sabak-Ha and Suhem cenotes, where sponge samples were collected through diving at depths between 3.3 and 11 meters. The presence of E. fluviatilis was confirmed, marking the first formal record with external morphological and spicular description, and molecular data of this species in Yucatán and Mexico cenotes. Its distinctive morphological characteristics were identified. This finding expands knowledge of sponge biodiversity in cenotes up to 3 species (Spongilla cenota and Radiospongilla crateriformis are previously recorded in the region) and suggests that more species may be present in these ecosystems. The restart of research on this group may set a solid base to future works on ecology, biotechnology and evolution. Systematic and molecular studies are recommended to improve the understanding of sponge diversity in these subterranean hábitats.
