The approach of Imam Al-dhahabi (may Allah have mercy on him) in dealing with the most prominent pests of knowledge seeking and its treatments
This research aims to explore the methodology of Imam Al-Dhahabi, may Allah have mercy on him, in addressing the prominent afflictions of seeking knowledge and their remedies. It identifies six significant afflictions that some seekers of knowledge face, which are: insincere intentions, following desires, turning away from the truth, blind imitation, fanaticism, and envy among peers. The researcher employed an analytical inductive method and a critical approach, leading to several findings, notably that the afflictions of seeking knowledge were strongly present in Al-Dhahabi's writings. He often linked these afflictions to knowledge, both negatively and positively. This can be attributed to his extensive focus on observing the etiquette of seeking knowledge and its afflictions in most of his discussions on scholarly issues and his reflections on knowledge and its scholars. Al-Dhahabi's methodology did not only address and critique the afflictions of seeking knowledge and their dangers to the self and knowledge; he also provided remedies for them and presented positive examples through his biographical sketches of the early generations of the ummah and its great figures. The researcher recommends that scholars, interested individuals, and graduate students track and document all the afflictions of seeking knowledge identified by the esteemed scholars of this nation, along with their diagnoses, criticisms, and remedies.
