Reimagining Knowledge Organization with <scp>AI</scp> and Human‐in‐the‐loop
ABSTRACT Long driven by the need to structure information, the Knowledge Organization (KO) community now finds itself at the intersection of traditional practices and emerging AI technologies. While AI offers powerful tools for automating KO tasks, it also raises challenges around accuracy, transparency, and bias. Human expertise is even more needed at this time– not only to guide, interpret, and validate machine output, but also to ensure ethical, inclusive, and context‐sensitive knowledge systems. In this fast‐changing landscape with new AI technologies, reimagining KO requires a thoughtful discussion surrounding AI capabilities with human‐in‐the‐loop approaches, and this panel aims at addressing concerns surrounding these. In this panel, we will discuss questions about the whole KO landscape first. Specifically, we ask questions such as: What does KO look like in the age of AI? Second, we address questions concerning the human‐in‐the‐loop dynamics in KO and AI, for instance: where should human intervention be prioritized in the lifecycle of knowledge organization? The panelists will provide insight into these questions through examples from their research and practice, collectively discuss issues and opportunities that AI poses for KO work and speculate on the ongoing role of human expertise. This panel is sponsored by SIG‐CMR.
