The Essential Role of Libraries in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals
In 205, the international community embarked on a landmark journey with the adoptionof the 200 Agenda for Sustainable Development. At its core are the Sustainable DevelopmentGoals (SDGs), a comprehensive framework embraced by 9 countries as an "urgent call foraction by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership". This agenda servesas a "shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into thefuture," moving beyond previous development models to integrate economic, social, andenvironmental dimensions into a unified vision. The SDGs address a wide spectrum of complexglobal challenges, from ending poverty in all its forms (SDG) and achieving zero hunger (SDG2) to reducing inequality (SDG 0) and taking urgent action to combat climate change (SDG).Central to this entire endeavour is the foundational principle to "leave no one behind," an ethosthat demands inclusive progress that reaches the most vulnerable populations first.2 Thiscommitment to universal inclusion sets the stage for the vital contributions of communitybasedinstitutions.
