A UTILIZAÇÃO DE SAIS FUNDIDOS COMO MATERIAL DE ARMAZENAMENTO TÉRMICO EM BATERIAS DE CARNOT

ABSTRACT As the global energy landscape shifts towards low-carbon systems, the successful integration of variable renewable electricity sources, such as solar and wind, requires, amongst other, effective storage solutions. Molten salts serve as excellent thermal storage media in Carnot batteries due to their high heat storage density and potential low cost. When there is excess electricity from sources like photovoltaic panels and wind turbines, Carnot batteries convert it into heat and store it in molten salt tanks. During discharge, the stored heat is converted back into electricity. This article provides an overview of the use of molten salts in Carnot batteries, highlighting the levelized cost of storage (LCOS), as well as operational aspects, including material degradation and thermal stability, presenting mitigation strategies, and offering perspectives for future research directions.
