Using OnSSET in Modelling a Decentralize Electrification in Kano and Jigawa, Nigeria
This presentation, titled “Using OnSSET in Modelling a Decentralized Electrification in Kano and Jigawa, Nigeria” was developed as part of the Energy Modelling Platform for Nigeria (EMP-N 2025) training. The work applies the Open Source Spatial Electrification Tool (OnSSET) to simulate least-cost electrification pathways for Kano and Jigawa States under Nigeria’s Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) project. The study evaluates three policy scenarios: Baseline, PBG Enhancement, and DARES Integrated (MST + PBG) to estimate future energy access, investment needs, and renewable energy deployment between 2025 and 2030. It integrates demographic, technical, and economic data to identify optimal mixes of grid, mini-grid, and stand-alone solar systems, with projections showing up to 90–95% electrification under the integrated scenario. The presentation concludes with policy insights, future research directions, and the need for localized energy planning, productive-use promotion, and stronger public–private collaboration to achieve universal, low-carbon energy access in Northern Nigeria.
