An Analogy of Grace, HenryShea, S.J., South Bend, University of Notre Dame Press, 2025 (ISBN 9780268208639), viii + 325 pp., Hb $65
May's exploration of colonial Evangelical African-American women's unique and challenging theological voices, spiritual journeys and religious narratives goes a long-ways towards answering significant questions about what exactly is authentic, true and genuine Christian faith with respect to biblical principles of reconciliation, regeneration and redemption.Yet, at the same time and in light of May's overarching analysis, it is also important to reconsider the relationship between sociopolitical freedom and authentic faith in Christ considering that May sees the divine confirmation of human success in the lives of these remarkable colonial Evangelical Black women in spite of White racism, Eurocentric Christianity and White society. To be reflective of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, May contends that Anglo-Americans must be able to reject white Supremacy as a matter of faith while Whiteness must also be conceptualized as not necessarily irredeemable or inviolable or inseparable from unrighteousness.May's version of true and authentic Evangelical Black Christian faith seen through the lens of these female narratives is theologically deeply Christological and in search of a hidden God who conceals himself in order to encourage one to seek him fully in addition to inviting one to pursue the essence of Christianity and the authentic message of the Gospel.May's detailed, descriptive and compelling contribution to the scholarship on colonial Evangelical African-American Christianity and contemporary Black Christianity is not only thought-provoking but revelatory and critically insightful concerning the imperative to reject essentialist racialized binary reasoning, hyper-politicization and racialization in contemporary Black religion in favour of seeking out an authentic, practical and transformative Christian faith grounded in the essence of Christianity and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
