Cybersecurity Threat Modeling for PID Systems: Upholding Integrity and Sustaining Availability

This is the second and concluding part of the article titled “Cybersecurity Threat Modeling and Risk Mitigation for PID Systems in Open Science – Part 1” (DOI: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.13923703 The three pillars of cybersecurity—the CIA triad—and their implications for a Persistent Identifier (PID) system represent a shared responsibility between providers and their members. The paper identified several risks that could be exploited and provided actionable solutions to mitigate them in PID systems. Threats such as metadata poisoning, author hijacking, and dead links, among others, were discussed. The paper concludes that PID systems cannot exist in isolation and that protecting the PID ecosystem requires a collective community effort.
