Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies in Library and Information Services

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies—such as machine learning (ML), naturallanguage processing (NLP), the Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, and augmented reality(AR)—are rapidly transforming Library and Information Services (LIS). This paper examineshow these technologies reshape user discovery, resource management, preservation, andoutreach in modern libraries. Through an integrative literature-informed approach combinedwith a small-scale exploratory survey of library professionals and system logs, the studyidentifies benefits, challenges, and future directions. AI-driven discovery layers improverelevance and personalization; automation streamlines cataloging and metadata creation;predictive analytics supports collection development and user services; while digital preservationbenefits from advanced storage and integrity-check systems. Ethical concerns—privacy, algorithmic bias, and job displacement—remain pressing and require policy and capacitybuildingresponses. The paper proposes a practical framework for technology adoption inlibraries that balances innovation with access, equity, and professional skill development.Recommendations are provided for practitioners, managers, and policymakers to implement AIresponsibly and inclusively.
