Navigating Valuation Complexity: The Role of Start-Up Valuation Techniques in Venture Capital Investment Stages
Abstract: This paper analyses how start-up valuation techniques affect a venture capitalist's funding decision at different investment stages in the Delhi NCR region. The quantitative and qualitative data have been used to evaluate the different valuation methods, namely Comparable Company Analysis, Precedent Transactions, and Discounted Cash Flow, which occur while funding high growth-startups. The study also identifies two key issues facing venture capitalists: market volatility and limited data availability on historical experience, thereby subjective growth projections. Together, these increase the intricacy of valuation, meaning their decisions also become subjective. Studies of various regression tests and other statistics show a minor yet substantial correlation between better valuation accuracy and funding potential; hence, improved valuation models could result in better investment results. The findings of this study highlight the need for a better valuation methodology, a demand that would help foster informed, sustainable funding decisions and better support the start-up ecosystem.
