Equality In Society
This paper explores the evolving idea of equality by tracing its roots through ancient philosophy andliterature. Beginning with the structured hierarchies of Plato and Aristotle, we examine how the concept ofjustice was often tied to one’s social role rather than universal fairness. Moving forward, the Stoicphilosophers Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius present a contrasting vision—one where human dignity existsindependently of status. By reflecting on these foundational thinkers, the paper invites readers to confronthow ideas of hierarchy, merit, and dignity continue to shape modern society. Ultimately, it challenges us toask: is equality truly real, or a convenient illusion? Keywords: equality, justice, hierarchy, Stoicism, ancient philosophy, Plato, Aristotle, Marcus Aurelius, socialroles, dignity
