Determinants of employee's occupational stress in Commercial Banks found at Dire Dawa Administration

This study examined the determinants of employee‘s occupational stress in Commercial Banks found at Dire Dawa Administration. In order to answer the above objectives, a cross-sectional research design using a quantitative approach of survey method was deployed. Proportional and random sampling design techniques were used to select the sample respondents. In order to collect data, the structured questionnaire was employed. The questions were based on the Likert scale (each variable was measured using previously developed instrument with a 5-point Likert scale for all the measurements used ranging from (1) strongly disagree to (5)-strongly agree). To investigate the relationship between the independent variable (social support, work overload, role ambiguity, role conflict) and the dependent variable (occupational stress), SPSS 21 software was used. The questionnaires were analysed using both descriptive statistics such as frequency distribution, percentages and inferential statistics such as Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro Wilk tests for normality tests, Mann-Whitney U-Test and Kruskal-Wallis H-test for the independent group comparison. Moreover, multiple linear regressions (OLS) were used to ascertain if there are a mean differences and relationship between the dependent and independent variables. The findings from the study indicated that the demographic variables such as age, gender, marital status and work experience had insignificant influence in predicting the occupational stress. Likewise, the regression results for the independent variables of role conflict and ambiguity had not statistically significant influence on employee‘s job stress. But, work overload and social support, had significantly influenced the occupational stress of bankers. Finally the study had recommended that banks should emphasize more on reducing work overloads and give more attention on improving the type of social support system in their working environment to effectively manage employees‘ job stress.
