TREND OF TUBERCULOSIS AND ITS TREATMENT OUTCOMES IN BULE HORA GENERAL HOSPITAL, WEST GUJI ZONE, OROMIA REGIONAL STATE, ETHIOPIA

ABSTRACT Tuberculosis is caused by the bacillus Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, and is one of the leading infectious diseases and health burden in the world. Millions of people continue to fall sick with Tuberculosis each year. However, researches made on the trend of tuberculosis in the health institutions of Ethiopia were limited. The objective of this study was to determine the trend of tuberculosis and its treatment outcomes in the past five years in Bule Hora General Hospital, West Guji Zone, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia. In this retrospective study, a five years (2015 to 2019) TB cases record review was done to assess the trend and treatment outcomes of Tuberculosis patients in Bule Hora General Hospital. A total of 720 TB patients were registered for the last 5 years and treated in Bule Hora General Hospital. Of the five year total TB patients, 366 (50.83%) were males and 354 (49.16%) were females. Majority [465(64.58%)] of them were found between 15-44 years, 149 (20.69%) of them were found between 0-14 years, 83(11.52%) of them were found between 45-64 years and 23 (3.19%) of them were found in 65 and above years respectively. Most (88.19%) of them were with pulmonary TB while only 11.80% of them were with EPTB and of these, 357(49.58%) were with SPPTB, 278(38.61%) were with SNPTB and 85(11.80%) were with EPTB cases. Regarding treatment outcomes; because the treatment outcome of the year 2019 is incomplete, only treatment outcome of four years (2015-2018) is calculated. Of these 546 (93.81%) were successfully treated, 5(0.86%) lost to follow up, 30 (5.15%) died and 1(0.17%) patients were moved to MDR-TB register. So that for more improvement of these trends and treatment outcomes of the hospital, providing health education on transmission and controlling TB, strengthening and supporting health institutions that provide treatment and medication on TB especially in villages of Bule Hora area and initiating and mobilizing the society to fight against TB were recommended.
