Interview guide and data on interviews conducted
This report describes the BIAS project’s Work Package 4 “Ethnographies and Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) research” overall methodological approach, the work conducted in the first year of the approach (Stage 1), and the connection between Stage 1 and Stage 2 (remainder) of the fieldwork. Stage 1 primarily consists of dedicated fieldwork across multiple countries and settings, in order to gain deeper qualitative insight into HR practices, bias at work, technological forms of potential discrimination. The work done in WP4 will also inform the technological development (WP3) and stakeholder engagement (WP5) of the BIAS project. WP4 is grounded in social sciences and humanities (SSH) based research which places significant emphasis on ethnographic fieldwork, both as a means to gain an in-depth understanding of the state of AI in the European labour market and as a method to guide the development of new, socially responsible AI technology. This report firstly provides a review of previous work on AI bias in previous research literature, and the BIAS projects expert interviews. It then introduces the methodological framework used for Stage 1 of the fieldwork, followed by an overview of the fieldwork conducted for that first stage and initial findings from the fieldwork. It then describes the link between Stage 1 and the newly termed “Stage 2” of the fieldwork which is ongoing as of the time of writing this report (see future deliverables D4.2 and D4.3 for full overviews over Stage 2 results). This is followed by next steps, before summarizing of the report.
